Open mold

Open mold

Open molding is a low-cost and efficient method for manufacturing composite materials.
The mold opening process includes spraying (shredding) and manual mold laying. This proven molding method is used to produce boats, RV parts, truck cabs and fenders, spas, bathtubs, showers and other fiberglass composite products. In this process, a single-sided mold is used as the shape and decorative surface of the part. The prepared mold surface is coated with a gel coat. The reinforcement is then applied manually and then wetted with the catalytic resin, or during the spraying process, the catalytic resin and chopped glass fibers are sprayed onto the previously gel-coated surface. Add additional laminate to increase thickness and strength as needed. The air is then removed from the laminate by hand to allow the part to cure. In addition to the reinforcing material, a low-density core material, such as pastewood, foam or honeycomb, can be added to stiffen the laminate without adding significant weight.

Open molding is the most flexible of all composite manufacturing processes because part sizes and design options are almost unlimited. Generally, open molding processes are used for large-size products that cannot be produced in a more automated process, or for small-volume parts that cannot prove the higher mold cost of an automated process.

KUKE has everything a manufacturer needs for hand-layup and painting processes. Gelcoats, various glass fiber reinforcements, catalysts, resins and equipment are available from top suppliers, and our technical support team is ready to assist with process issues and application support.
