Molding

Molding

Light RTM is a closed mold system consisting of an "a" side base mold and a semi-rigid glass fiber "B" side mold or pair mold.

The mold flange contains a seal that forms an airtight seal when the counter-mold is placed on the base mold and vacuum pressure is applied. The laminated stack of fiber reinforced material is placed in the mold and the tool set is closed. The vacuum clamps the molds together. When vacuum pressure is applied to the sealed mold, catalytic resin is pumped into the mold through ports and resin runners built into the counter-mold. After the resin is cured, the counter-mold is removed and the part is demolded from the base mold.

Light RTM is a versatile manufacturing process that can use multiple base molds and a counter-mold to increase productivity through a fastest 20-minute mold cycle. Light RTM can also produce finished surfaces on both sides of the part, reducing labor costs, enhancing dimensional stability, and improving process control. Since it is a closed mold system, Light RTM greatly reduces the emission of harmful air pollutants (HAP) and improves the working conditions of the workshop. While Light RTM can be a real improvement over open molding, mold requirements must be considered. Without some modifications, tools designed for open molds may not be suitable for closed molds.

Reusable bag molding, also known as closed cavity bag molding or CCBM, is a simple, low-cost closed mold process that combines the advantages of light RTM and vacuum infusion processes.
